Date of PPPL Report: October 14, 1999

Conference Paper: Presented at the IAEA Fusion Energy Conference (Yokohama, Japan, October 19 - 24, 1998).

This paper reports: (1) substantial transport reduction by turbulence-driven EXB flows observed in 3D nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of microturbulence in magnetically-confined toroidal plasmas; (2) analytical derivation of the effective shearing rate for the time-dependent EXB flow; (3) interpretation of experimental data using linear gyrokinetic microinstability rotation models of EXB shear; and (4) other developments in gyrokinetic theory and simulation.
