A correlation between the presence of energetic particle modes and long-period sawteeth is explored. The crash of monster sawteeth is explained in terms of the loss of the stabilizing fast particles due to the energetic particle modes. High q<sub>a</sub> discharges, which never develop long-period sawteeth, are explained in terms of ion loss due to Toroidal Alfv&#233;n Eigenmodes (TAE).</p>
